Why are cats more expensive than dogs?
- Cats do not like water
- The majority of cats do no get groomed as frequently as dogs.
- Most of the time, it takes two people to work on a cat because one person needs to hold the cat and keep it calm, while the other does the actual grooming.
- Shaving does not stop shedding, it only makes the pieces of hair smaller.
- It does not make your dog cooler. It actually makes it more difficult for your dog to regulate their temperature. The coat is designed to insulate the dog from heat and cold.
- Shaving the hair can permanently damage the coat. The coat my not grow back properly. It can grow back coarse, patchy, dull, wispy or not at all. In some cases it can actually trigger alopecia, where the hair falls out and stops growing.
- After shaving your dog can get sun burn and may overheat because it does not have a protective layer of coat.
- Daily brushing can significantly cut down shedding.
- We offer a de-shedding treatment which includes a shedding shampoo, shedding conditioner and additional brushing. The first time we do the treatment it usually cuts down shedding by at least 50%. If done on a regular basis, it can cut down on shedding by up to 80%.
- Short hair dogs usually need to be groomed every 4-8 weeks. Most of them do need to have their nails trimmed, anal glands expressed and ears cleaned, even if you do bath them at home.
- Long haired dogs usually need to be groomed every 4-6 weeks because their coats require more maintenance than short hair dogs. They can become matted in a short period of time.
- Short hair cats usually keep themselves pretty clean but they do need to have their nails trimmed. Nail trimming should be done every 4-8 weeks. Bathing and brushing can be done a few times a year or as often as you prefer to cut down on shedding and keep the cat clean.
- Long hair cats usually need to be groomed every 4-8 weeks. Regular grooming helps to cut downs on shedding and hairballs(gross). We also thoroughly brush the cats which prevents them from getting matted. Sanitary trims are often needed to keep cats cleaner when using the litter box.
- The best thing to do is to have them groomed frequently. Frequent grooms help make grooming a routine part of life. If they only come in once or twice a year then it is scary because this is not part of their routine. Anything out of their routine is scary for pets. If the pet is matted when it is groomed, it makes grooming more uncomfortable than it would be if their coat was not matted.
- Natural calming supplements are available to help alleviate some anxiety.
- Exercise before grooming gets out some of the nervous energy and makes pet feel more relaxed.
- Bath=5-30 minutes depending on coat type and condition, as well as size.
- Blow Dry=5-60 minutes depending on coat type/length and pet's size. If the pet is scared of the dryer, this time could increase to hours because the pet needs to be towel dried and then fan dried.
- Brushing=5-60 minutes depending on coat type/length and the condition of the coat. Matting and excessive undercoat double the amount of time.
- Nail Trim=2-10 minutes depending on the pet's cooperation.
- Ear Cleaning/Plucking=2-10 minutes depending on cooperation and amount of build-up/hair in the ear.
- Haircut=10 minutes-3 hours depending on breed, size, complexity of the haircut and the pet's cooperation. A face, feet and sanitary trim takes 10 minutes but a full hand scissor on a standard poodle takes 3 hours. We are also working with sharp equipment and the pets move around. We want to be safe so we don't rush.
- Variables=extra time. Examples: Sometimes the pet needs to take a break because they are tired, lose focus or are getting annoyed/fidgetty. Groomers need breaks and lunch. Occasionally, the pet goes potty in a kennel and has to be rebathed and dried. The groomer spends extra time speaking with another client about their pet. Another groomer requires assistance.
